National Park Week

Celebrate spring and the great outdoors during National Park Week! Beginning today, the nation's 392 parks are waiving their entrance fees. Through Sunday, April 25 the annual event honors the beauty and history of National Parks--and you can experience it all for free! Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, and Yosemite are just a few of the popular spots that you can take advantage of during the week on a solo trip, a romantic site seeing getaway, or a family adventure.

Entrance per car to Grand Canyon National Park is normally $25, but the National Park Service has decided to open its gates to the public so that you don't have to open your wallet. The event makes it easy to experience the country's natural wonders. Special promotions and events occur throughout National Park Week. The National Park Foundation will run their "Share a Park, and Shape a Life" program to introduce young people to the wilderness, and Saturday, April 24 is National Junior Ranger Day. Kid-friendly activities teach children about the duties of Park Rangers.

Hiking opportunities are another great way to take in the scenery. Check out these spots while admission to the parks is free.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Tennessee and North Carolina
You can spot black bears and elk throughout the 800 miles of hiking trails that run through this frequently visited park. It includes 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park – North Dakota
One of the lesser-known parks, Theodore Roosevelt has more than 100 miles of trails for those looking for a more private escape. Big horn sheep, bison, and prairie dogs are some of the wildlife friends that you may meet along the way.

Yosemite National Park – California
Roughly the size of Rhode Island, Yosemite has 800 miles of hiking trails that range from beginner-level to advanced treks across the park. The Half Dome trail takes 10 to 14 hours and requires a permit from the park service during weekdays.

Shenandoah National Park – Virginia
Waterfalls, wilderness area, and over 500 miles of hiking paths can be found at Shenandoah. The Appalachian Trail makes up 101 miles of the hiking area.

Isle Royale National Park – Michigan
The largest island in Lake Superior has 165 miles of hiking trails. The park contains 400 other smaller islands, none of which are accessible by car. If there's any time to experience the secluded attractions on this island, it's during National Park Week.
