Practice for the Verizon Heritage golf tournament is underway in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Part of the 2010 PGA TOUR schedule, the event runs April 12 – April 18 at Harbour Town Golf Links at The Sea Pines Resort. The competition officially runs April 15 – April 18. While all eyes have been on Tiger Woods since he returned to golf, he's actually sitting this round out; Brian Gay is the Verizon Heritage defending champion.
The 42nd annual event has a purse of $5.7 million and the winning share is $1,026,000. You can purchase tickets on site at Harbour Town Golf Links, by calling (800) 234-1107, or online at the Verizon Heritage website. Every year 135,000 people attend the tournament.
Hilton Head is known for world-class golf, and The Sea Pines Resort occupies more than 5,000 acres on the southern end of the island. Off the South Carolina coast, the island is only 12 miles long by 5 miles wide. The golf course runs adjacent to the island's landmark lighthouse. Although it's small, the island is one of the top family beach designations in the country and has 240 restaurants to choose from.
