Pet friendly vacation rentals are the perfect cost-saving option when you're looking to travel with your pet and not have to pay money for someone else to care for them when you're away. Your pet gets to travel with you, and you save money! It's the best of both worlds. Pet lifestyle expert, Wendy Diamond, is the founder/executive editor of Animal Fair magazine and recently talked with USA Today about the pet travel section of her new book, It's a Dog's World: The Savvy Guide to Four-Legged Living.
Diamond is currently on a 15-city excursion, the "Yappy Hour Rescue Tour," to raise money for local animal rescue groups. USA Today asked Diamond about the number one mistake owners make when traveling with their pets. She explained:
"We're pet parents. We're no more owners. My No. 1 tip is to consult your vet, because not every dog or cat can travel. It's like people. There are some people who just refuse to get on planes and they have to take trains or ride in cars. It's the same thing for a dog. Never give them any kind of (prescription) sedative. Everything should be all-natural or homeopathic. Bring their favorite toy and a blanket, so they feel at home. Get them used to the dog bed and put them in for a few hours so they feel comfortable in it. Always bring all of their vet info just in case anything happens and an ID tag with that information as well. And some treats."
