The 2010 American Ski Classic, heads back to Vail from March 18th through the 21st. The Ski Classic is the original Pro/AM celebrity ski event, and always includes some of the biggest names in racing history. The way the event works, is Friday, March 19th marks the Volvo Legends of Skiing Giant Slalom, where the old rivalry's between Olympic, World, and World Cup Champions are rekindled in an all out battle.
Last years celebrity/legend guest list included the likes of: Jim "Moose" Barrows (U.S. Ski Team), Brenda Buglione (NCAA All-American Skier, Host of Snow Motion on Fox), Billy Kid (First U.S. male to win an Olympic medal), Franz Klammer (25 World Cup downhill victories), Brigitte Oertli (10-year veteran of Swiss women's team), and Fritz Strobl (2002 Olympic gold medalist).
After the Giant Slalom competition, a welcome party and brief award ceremony will commence, followed by a special edition Bud Light Street Beat performance, starting at 6 pm. Street Beat is a local concert series, featuring great local and national bands, prizes (including a brand new Volvo and return trip to Vail), and it is 100 percent free to the public. Last years performance welcomed the blues band, Taj Mahal to the stage.
The following days will see the legends from the Ski Classic switch roles of individual competitors to team captains for the Ford Cup celebrity team races. Each team will be made up of five members and will face two-days worth of head-to-head racing in order win the gold medal and a years worth of bragging rights.
Off the slopes and into the cozy indoors, the events of the weekend will also include a few charity events, including the Gorsuch Tea Dance and Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament. The Gorsuch Tea Dance and third annual Hold 'em For Hope tournament is a great way to shake off the chill, and spend a little money towards a good cause.
The Texas Hold 'Em include cocktails, a buffet dinner, silent and live auctions, and charity-based casino games hosted throughout the evening. Day 2 of the Ford Cup celebrity team races is traditionally the most exciting. The final run of the afternoon will follow with the annual Legends of Skiing Banquet. Hopefully you will be able to check out the 2010 American Ski Classic!!
